Vivo Vision MR Headset Set for August 21 Launch
Vivo is preparing to introduce its latest mixed reality device, the Vivo Vision Exploration Edition, with the official unveiling scheduled for 21 August in China. This release marks the brand’s second venture into mixed reality technology, following the debut of HTC’s Vivo XR Elite in 2023, which was the first Android-based MR headset on the market. The upcoming model positions Vivo alongside other major Android brands in this competitive field.
The Vivo Vision is engineered to deliver an immersive blend of real-world surroundings and digital elements, distinguishing it from traditional virtual reality headsets. With an approximate weight of 380 grams, it offers a notable reduction compared to the Apple Vision Pro, which weighs around 650 grams. This lighter design brings it closer in weight to high-end over-ear headphones such as the AirPods Max, aiming to enhance comfort and reduce physical strain during extended usage sessions.
A key aspect of the design is the inclusion of a front panel housing no fewer than six cameras or sensors. This configuration enables precise real-world passthrough, enhancing the sense of presence and realism when interacting with mixed reality environments. The technology aims to provide a more natural experience by capturing and integrating live surroundings seamlessly into the user’s field of view.
The internal hardware is powered by a Qualcomm processor, placing the headset within the premium tier of MR devices in terms of performance capabilities. Eye-tracking and hand gesture controls are built into the system, features that remain relatively rare in the global market. This combination is expected to offer more intuitive navigation and interaction, moving beyond conventional controller-based input methods.
Vivo has also prioritised integration within its existing product ecosystem. The headset will work in conjunction with the forthcoming X200 Ultra smartphone, enabling users to convert panoramic images into spatial video content optimised for mixed reality viewing. This compatibility expands the potential use cases, making the device more versatile for those already invested in Vivo’s technology.
Although the Vivo Vision Exploration Edition represents a significant step forward in the company’s MR ambitions, it is not slated for widespread retail availability during 2025. Instead, the focus will be on controlled demonstrations and user trials. Interested individuals will be able to register for in-store testing sessions after the launch date, providing direct feedback that will inform the development of future iterations.
By positioning the product as an “exploration edition,” Vivo appears to be adopting a measured approach to the market, using the opportunity to refine both hardware and software before committing to a mass release. This strategy mirrors trends seen in other high-tech industries, where early access programmes and targeted trials help shape more polished consumer-ready products.
